Downsides of Religion by LadyVe Downsides of Religion by LadyVe
Funny quote from my family.

As a Christian, I'm proud of my faith, but that doesn't say I don't get annoyed with my fellow Christians, nor am I the greatest example of the religion. And let's face it: as much good as Christians have done for the world, they've done at least as much bad. Most religions are like that, sadly.

I've always wondered, Do you actualy truely genuinely belive in the virgin birth, in miricles in a god who answers prayers and heven? If so do you look farward to death and avoid living healthly? Do you not get freaked out by the fact your logo is a dead guy on a stick?

I have autism and i realy dont understand. I know christians who clearly derive comfert from their faith but they realy dont like being asked these questions.

also I dont understand what it is your proud of can you explain?

Sorry if the question are too personal.

I like te idea that gods bigest problem is a lazy PR rep.

If I have to be honest, I don't believe in a lot of these things. I believe in a Christian moral set above anything (helping your fellow people and treating them with dignity), but for the rest I don't really know what to think nor that I think it's important just whether Jesus was born from a virgin (he at least tried to do something good for people who were outcasts by society) or not or whether the Red Sea truly parted because of God (reality check: the Red Sea actually parts on its own at specific times. It has to do with natural cycles).
As for God answering prayers: he gave us a brain, two feet and two hands and a common sense: if you want something done, get off your butt and do it yourself. On death and heaven, please no. Heaven would be nice at the end of the road, but I prefer a long, healthy life and do everything to attain that and very much like to find my happiness while I'm still here. As for a dead guy on a cross as a logo (note, we use ONLY the cross, which isn't really specific to Christianity: crucifixtion was a common Roman death sentence for riot leaders and troublemakers, there are more religions whose patron saint/prophet etc died violently so it doesn't bother me so much.

thank you for answering. what would you say difines a christian? If I were to give you a group of people and ask you to lable tham as christian or not christian what are the things you would look for in those people (in terms of beliefe and behaviour and so on)

Its a bit of an abstract question i know and I'll understand if there is no real consensus on the answer.

thanks again

I would only label those as Christians who live by the Christian code of tolerance, respect and trying to make the world a better place. The people at the Westboro church, for example? They're not Christians: they're sick, brainwashing and disgusing homophobic maniacs who aren't worhy of the name.

Well there's no denying there's alot of loudmouthed idiots parading their episteme (their understanding of how the world is) like it's some dogma that everyone should follow.
I for one think that everyone would be alot better of if we considered eachothers understanding of the world as we consider eachothers favourite movie: Something we may not totaly agree on, but as long as there's a reasoning to it we should accept it as their favourite.

I disagree! there is a diference between opinion (that movie was awsome) and evidence based fact (that movie had 900 visual effect shots) while everyone is entitled to there opinion if someone says a film has amazing visual effects when it contains no effect shots then i shall disregard that persons opinion outright and encorage them to pay a little more attention in future if they dont want to waiste there money.

thank you fore teachingme the word episteme I shsll use it lots at work

I'm Christian too, my fellow "good" Christians piss me off , as much as all those "tolerant" Atheists. Honestly. what's with all this Christianity bashing? I mean, it was a center of lots of evil, but I would say it was all because of fake PEOPLE. Man, I'm pretty sad about all this Christian-Muslim-Hindu-Agnostic-Atheist-etc. hate :(

I know... And, as a Christian myself, I think that's the problem. It's always the few idiots (in ANY religion) that get the most attention and give everyone else, the decent people, a bad name. There are plenty of decent and tolerant Christians, Muslims, Hindus etc, but it's the terrorists and the ones who use faith to excuse their own horrible actions that ruin it for the rest of us.

That's EXACTLY how I feel now a days! I'm a Christian too, but I think that a lot of so called Christians are doing more harm in this world than they are doing good. And then people hate us, which I don't really blame them for. If I had some old religious guys hatin' on me, I couldn't help but feel a little angry. :/

Exactly and this is why I amde this. To show that the concept of religion isn't bad but its followers sometimes are.

There's agnostic. People who believe in there is a deity, but don't have to follow a main stream religion to appreciate their faith.

Funny thing is, it was history that showed just how bad Religion can be. And I'm glad I don't need it to follow my life...
Despite, I'm helping Dante from EA Dante's Inferno being the good guy.

I'm a Christian, but I don't believe laws and good moral come from divinity but from reason. I also believe in science and what it can do for us. So yeah, I'm somewhat liberal, which mean I often butt heads with the old-school calvinists. :)

I gave up on religion cause I found it didn't offer anything to me.

It sucks the society doesn't know what their beliefs are, like shown in this video.

That's absurd... Sorry, but if you have a demon in you when you're mean, they should just about exorcise all the old-school Christians who think it's okay to throw their homosexual children out of the house or look down at a Muslim/Hindu/Buddhist etc.

i tink some Christians are just uh....weird? i mean its god who made their children what they are now. And all the desieses the people have were sent by god and if you have some sort of desease all the ones i know say that i did someting bad...like they dint...
But no offence to anyone, i respect every one.

Funny you posting this now. I just started studying Wicca as a gesture of respect to my ex-boyfriend. I'm learning that some Wiccans are just as intimidated by Christians as some Christians are of Wiccans. Just like uninformed Christians get images of devil-worshiping hags around a cauldron at the thought of a Witch, so too do Wiccans get images of homophobic and bigoted crusaders at the thought of a Christian.

On a related note, have you seen this video of the children of Westboro Baptist Church? [link] It's horrifying.

Indeed. I think we should be respectful of other religions, even if we don't agree with it. And to be honest, it's hard to feel any sympathy for Chistians who dismiss the part of the Bible that talks about respect for others.
